We can’t think of one person who doesn’t want clean, gorgeous, clear skin.

Maybe she is¬†born with it – that clear skin that looks flawless even though she slept in her makeup, drinks more glasses of wine than glasses of water and washes her face with bar soap. But let’s be honest, those blessed few are just that: the few.

For the rest of us, we need to take care of our skin to help keep it looking amazing.

1. Cleanse

First things first, we need to slough the day’s makeup, sunscreen and environmental pollutants off our faces. Choosing the right face wash is an important step. To do so, it’s crucial to understand our skin: is it oily? Dry? A combination of both? Or just normal? And it’s also important to reevaluate our skin periodically. As we age and go through other stages of life, such as pregnancy or moving to a different climate, our skin can change, and so too should the products we use.

A good choice, no matter the state of your skin, is a gentle cleanser. Find the best cleanser you can afford that is free of parabens and contains as many natural and organic ingredients as possible. Wash twice a day using your fingers lightly in a circular motion. Another great option is to use a gentle face cleansing brush to help remove makeup, oil and dead skin cells. This will help reveal brighter, more radiant skin since dead skin cells will muddy your complexion.

If you’re looking for a wash that also offers a light exfoliation, a cleanser that features glycolic acid is a great way to go. Glycolic acid is one of the smallest alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and helps keep oily or problematic skin under control. If you chose a face wash that has AHAs, make sure you use a good daily sunscreen to protect your skin from increased sun sensitivity.

2. Apply the right products

After your face is properly cleansed, it’s time to call in the reinforcements. We’re talking about anti-aging serums, anti-wrinkle serums, facial oils that help reduce the look of sunspots, eye creams, toners, moisturizers, over-the-counter retinoids (hello, Differin! Anyone for a Target run?).

These workhorses replenish the moisture you’ve lost during the day, inject much-needed boosts of ingredients to help minimize the effects of aging, assist in clarifying your skin and help you achieve the dewy, glowing, clean skin you’re after.

3. Tools and devices

Take your skincare to the next level with a variety of tools and devices. There are plenty on the market that can help you achieve the clean, clear skin complexion of your dreams.

A dermaroller can help boost collagen and encourage your skin cells to renew quicker. Check out this blog post to learn more.

Another way to bring out the best in your skin is by using a facial toner device. They help firm up sagging skin and the loss of facial contour, which makes us look older. We think this facial toner from NuFACE looks amazing. It’s more than $100 off the regular price now through August 6 via Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale, so if you want to check out, now’s a great time to buy.

4. Lifestyle

We all know the deal, but a little reminder never hurt anyone. Staying hydrated with plenty of water help your skin look its best. If you don’t love the taste of water, try flavoring it with lemon or cucumber (we know, not our favorite, either) or even a zero-calorie flavor enhancer. Another way to make sure you and your skin are hydrated is by eating lots of crisp, fresh and juicy fruits and veggies. We personally use MyFitnessPal, a great calorie and water tracker, to make sure we’re meeting our goals.

Ensuring you get plenty of rest and limit or mitigate stress in your life also help keep your skin looking its most beautiful. You know how good you look and feel after a vacation? It’s because you’re well-rested, and the most stressful part of your day was probably choosing which shoes to wear.
