1. A little bit of derma rolling goes a long way

So you just got your new derma roller and you want to put it to work. We don’t blame you! This tool can do wonders for your skin. But don’t go crazy because rolling too frequently can damage your skin and have the reverse effect. The derma roller works by generating thousands of tiny channels in your skin, which signals to the body it’s time to create new skin and boost collagen. These microscopic wounds need time to heal, so make sure you give your skin the time it needs. Our derma roller’s needles are 0.5mm, so you can roll three or four times a week, depending on your skin’s sensitivity level.

2. Exfoliate the day before you use a derma roller

You’ll want to do a little prep work to get the most out of your derma rolling. Once a week, on a day you’re not rolling, make sure to remove any dead skin cells by exfoliating your skin. It is recommended that you use a gentle exfoliator that features a 10% Glycolic Acid solution. Remember to wait a day between exfoliating and rolling to avoid any skin sensitivity issues.

3. Steam it up with a warm shower

The softer your skin is before derma rolling, the better. Hop in the shower and allow warm water and steam to soften your skin. Softer skin lets the derma roller needles penetrate the skin easier. Be sure your skin is completely dry before you start your derma rolling session.

4. Use creams and serums to enhance derma rolling’s effects

To get the most out of your derma rolling, in addition to exfoliating the day before and softening your skin with warm water, you should include creams and serums in your derma rolling routine. Your derma roller will help increase the effectiveness of your creams and serums, which will help bring back that youthful, dewy skin we’re all looking for. We suggest applying a serum before you roll and finishing with a luxurious moisturizing cream.

How to use your Derma Roller

5. Shine bright like a…

Star! (Gotcha! Bet you thought we were going to say diamond, right? More on this later.)

You’ve got your roller, you’ve done all your prep work, now how do you actually use this thing? You want to roll your face in sections: cheeks, chin, nasolabial folds, lips, eyes (under, around and in between) and forehead. Apply light pressure and roll back and forth a couple of times in the following directions: up and down, left and right, and on the diagonal, essentially in an asterisk or star pattern.

6. Roll before bedtime

The best time to roll is before bed. This allows your skin to amp up the healing process and absorb all those essential cream and serum ingredients overnight. It also gives you a chance to let any redness calm down before you have face the world.

7. Sanitize your roller after every use

The cleanliness of your roller is crucial. After all, you’re using needles to create channels in your skin. Don’t share your derma roller with anyone, and make sure you sterilize it after every use. Luckily, cleaning it is easy – all you need is a cup and a bottle of alcohol (we’re talking isopropyl or rubbing alcohol, not that bottle of vodka stashed in your freezer). When you’re finished rolling, place your derma roller needles-down in a cup and pour enough alcohol to cover the roller’s head. Allow it to soak for three to five minutes and replace it in it’s storage container, making sure it’s dry before you put it away.

8. Hydrate often and eat healthy

Proper hydration and nutrients are a skin’s best friend. Remember, derma rolling causes microscopic wounds, and we want those wounds to heal properly. Drinking plenty of water and having a healthy diet help support your skin in the healing process (not to mention, many other positive effects on the body).

9. Avoid sun exposure

If water and healthy food are a skin’s best friend, then the sun is your skin’s worst enemy. While you should always minimize sun exposure, this is absolutely crucial after a derma rolling session.  When you skin is healing after derma rolling, it will be even more sensitive to sun exposure as new skin grows. Understandably, you might not be able to hide out in your house or your office to avoid the sun, especially with summer knocking on our doorstep. So if you are outdoors, wear a hat and sunglasses and use 30 SPF or greater sunscreen. Don’t forget to re-apply every couple hours, too!

10. Don’t neglect your regular skincare routine

While derma rolling alone can have magnificent effects on your skin, it works best with a regular skincare routine.  A good daily cleanser paired with a great daily serum and moisturizer, along with a weekly mask, adding derma rolling to your routine

Be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day

Patience, they say, is a virtue. If you do not see immediate results after the first couple sessions, don’t get discouraged. Trust us, if we knew of a method that would improve skin drastically overnight, we’d be sharing that with you, too. It could take anywhere from six months to a year to see the full benefits of derma rolling. Keep on a good schedule with derma rolling and make sure you’re using the best skincare products you can. Collagen production can be compared to the tortoise in the Tortoise and the Hare. Like the tortoise, collagen growth happens very slowly, but in the end your skin will win (just like that determined little tortoise) with derma rolling.
